Group 7(Ways to reduce methane, ozone and unburnt hydrocarbons in the environment) by Yee Jian, Yan Chong, Ya Ning, Ming Chung

Here's our video :

And here's our question ---
1) If cars were not invented, will there be less methane in the environment? Explain why?
2) What are the effects of  absence of ozone on the Earth?

And finally here's the Bonus Question!!

1) Explain the relationship between fast food chain stores and dinosaurs with regarding to this chapter.

Group 2 Oxides of nitrogen

Here is our youtube video!

And our open-ended question is:

What are the common sources of nitrogen oxides and
What are the negative effects of nitrogen oxides to the environment?

Group 8 open ended question (':

1) Give one word equation on how carbon dioxide is added to the atmosphere.
2) Explain why the increase in concentration of carbon dioxide is a major environmental concern.
3) Explain why methane is a greenhouse gas of greater impact than carbon dioxide.

Group 6: Reduce Sulfur Dioxide, Oxides of Nitrogen and Carbon Monoxide Emission in the Environment

Here's the link to our video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5v3FixwnE-0  :)

Our question to you!
What are more ways of reducing these gases in our daily lives?

Group 1: Sources and Effect of Sulfur Dioxide

What is Sulfur dioxide?

  • A colourless, pungent gas
  • Harmful pollutant (top 6 air pollutants)
  • chemical formula of SO2

Sources of sulfur dioxide

  •  Natural
  1. Release from oceans
  2. forest fires
  3. biological decay
  4. Volcanic activity
  • Industrial
  1. Emissions from industrial facilities
  2. fossil fuel combustion
  3. Generating electricity supply
Chart of the main contributions towards emissions of sulfur dioxide

Effects of sulfur dioxide

  • reacts with water vapour or other chemicals in the atmosphere to form sulfur based particles which reflect the sun's rays and cools the earth for periods of time (not necessarily a positive effect)
  • sulfur dioxide forms haze which reduces visibility
  • irritates eyes and cause breathing difficulties as it irritates lungs too
  • Forms into acid rain (rain with pH value of 4 or less)
  1. dissolves in rainwater to form sulfurous acid                                                                          (SO2 (g) +H2O (l)---> H2SO3 (aq) )
  2. sulfurous acid is oxidised in air to form sulfuric acid                                                                   (2 H2SO3 (aq)+ O2 (g) ---> 2 H2SO4 (aq) )
  3. Acid rain leaches important nutrients from soil and destroys plants
  4. reduce pH value of natural water bodies and kill aquatic life
  5. reacts with metals and carbonates, thus corroding and destroying monuments, statues, buildings and bridges

Open ended question:

Now that you know about the effects of sulfur dioxide on the environment, how is sulfur dioxide used in our daily lives and how does it affect us be it positively or negatively?
